How did the soviets influence the political situation in poland at the end of world war ii?

The tensions grew between the U.S and Soviet Union at the end of WWII because the separation of Germany and whether or not Poland should choose their own government and Germany's reparations. Also Soviet wanted to keep Germany weak because Germany had invaded them twice in 30 years.
